Most reading goals are abandoned by spring, not because people stop reading, but because the goal was set for an imaginary reader with unlimited free time. Here is a calmer way to do it.
Start from last year
The best predictor of how much you will read is how much you read last year. Look at your total, add a small stretch (maybe 10 to 20 percent), and stop there. If you read 20 books, aim for 24. Jumping to 100 sets you up to feel behind in February.
Count something you control
"Books" is the classic measure, but it can be misleading: a long fantasy novel and a short novella both count as one. If you are juggling very different lengths, consider:
- Pages if you read mostly long books
- Minutes if you listen to audiobooks
- Books if you want the simplest, most motivating number
Pick one and stick with it for the year.
Check progress, not the finish line

A goal is easier when you see where you are. Track your reading as you go, so you can see whether you are on pace. A good tracker shows how many books ahead of or behind pace you are, rather than a single number you can only face in December.
Use challenges for variety
A yearly total can get dull. Smaller challenges add fun without adding pressure:
- A genre challenge, like "five romance books this summer"
- A series challenge, like finishing a trilogy you started years ago
- A page challenge, like 3,000 pages over a long holiday
Short, specific challenges give you a win every few weeks.
Give yourself permission to adjust
If life gets busy, lower the goal in June and keep going. Nothing about reading should feel like a failure. A smaller goal you finish is better than a big one you quietly abandon.
Celebrate the recap
At the end of the year, look back: your busiest month, your favorite genre, your highest-rated books. A year-in-review turns a list of titles into a story about your reading life, and it is a good reason to start next year's goal.
In Spinefolk you can set a free yearly goal and look back with a Year in Review. Supporters can add extra challenges by genre, pages or dates. Set your goal.
