Switching

Switch from Goodreads to Spinefolk

Export your Goodreads library as a CSV and import it into Spinefolk in a few minutes. Your shelves, ratings, review dates and statuses come with you.

You can move your whole Goodreads history to Spinefolk in a few minutes. Nothing is deleted from Goodreads, so you can keep both while you decide.

1Export your library from Goodreads

  1. Sign in to the Goodreads website (the export is not available in the app).
  2. Open My Books.
  3. In the left-hand menu choose Import and export.
  4. Click Export Library. Goodreads prepares a file and a link appears when it is ready.
  5. Download the CSV file.

2Import it into Spinefolk

  1. Create your free Spinefolk account (or sign in).
  2. Open Settings, then Library, then Import from Goodreads or StoryGraph.
  3. Choose the CSV file you downloaded.
  4. Look over the preview and the counts, pick whether the imported books go on your shelf as owned or just into your reading history, and confirm. If you change your mind, Undo this import takes back everything it added.

What comes across

  • Your reading statuses: read, currently reading, want to read
  • Your star ratings and written reviews
  • The dates you finished books
  • Your shelves, as your reading history

Books are matched by ISBN first, then by title and author. Anything Spinefolk cannot match is still added so you do not lose it.

What to expect afterwards

Goodreads and Spinefolk keep different things, so you will notice a few differences: Spinefolk treats every edition of a book as one book, ratings can use quarter stars, and you can file books by where they sit on your shelves. After importing, scan the books you actually own to give each one a place.

Questions

Will it duplicate books I already added? No. Anything already in Spinefolk is kept as it is.

Can I undo an import? Yes. Tap Undo this import and only what the import added is removed. You can also delete your Spinefolk account any time, and download all your data first.
