How to never miss a new release from your favorite authors

A simple way to keep track of upcoming book releases, pre-order what you want, and get a reminder on release day.

October 9, 2026 · 2 min read

You find out your favorite author's new book came out three months ago. It happens to everyone. Here is how to stop it.

Keep a buy list, not just a to-read list

Your to-read list is books you plan to read. Your buy list is books you plan to buy. They overlap, but they are not the same: you may want to read a book from the library and buy a different one the day it comes out. Keeping two lists means your shopping list stays short and focused.

For each book on the buy list, note:

  • Priority, so you know what to buy first
  • A target price, if you wait for a sale
  • The edition you want (hardcover, paperback, special edition)

Follow release dates, not just authors

Publishers announce dates well in advance, and they sometimes move. A release calendar for just the books you care about is more useful than a general "new releases" page. In Spinefolk, your calendar shows upcoming books from your buy list and your reading list, plus ones that came out in the last month.

Get a reminder on the day

A pre-order is easy to forget. Turning on a release-day reminder means a small notification the morning a book comes out, so you can buy it, borrow it or add it to your shelf while you are still excited.

Buy it where you like

When a book is out, a good app gives you links to buy it, check your local library, or find a used copy. Some links are affiliate links, which means the app may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Spinefolk marks which stores do that.

A quick routine

  1. When you hear about a book, add it to your buy list.
  2. Turn on its release reminder.
  3. On release day, buy it or reserve it at the library.
  4. When it arrives, scan it onto your shelf and move it from "to buy" to "up next".
