Every book lover has a gap on the shelf where a friend's borrowed copy was supposed to be. Lending books is one of the nicest things you can do with them, and one of the easiest ways to lose them. The fix is not to stop lending. It is to write it down.
The three things to record
Whenever a book leaves your house, note:
- Which book (and which copy, if you have two)
- Who has it
- When you expect it back
That is all. The date matters most: "whenever" almost always means "never".
Make the date friendly
Agree on a return date out loud, and pick something generous, such as four weeks. Most people forget the book rather than keep it, so a date gives both of you something to remember. If someone is mid-way through, extending it is easy.
Let the app do the reminding

A paper note on the shelf works until you misplace the note. A lending tracker can do the awkward part for you. In Spinefolk, you open the book, tap Lend, type who has it and a due date, and the book shows as lent on your shelf and on your Home screen. When it is overdue, you see it, and you can send a gentle nudge instead of working up the courage to ask.
What to do when a book does not come back
- Wait a week past the date, then send a friendly message: "No rush, I just noticed I do not have it on my shelf. Could you bring it next time?"
- Offer a swap. If they love the book, they may prefer to keep it, and you can buy a replacement.
- Mark it as given away if you would rather let it go, so your collection count stays accurate.
Lend the right books
Keep your signed copies, first editions and out-of-print favorites at home. Lend books that are easy to replace. A tracker helps here too, because you can see at a glance which of your copies are special.
Borrowing counts too
The same system works in reverse. If you borrow a book, add it as borrowed, so you remember to return it and so it does not inflate the number of books you own.
